Malcolm Magic #6
Rating: 4/5
Gorgeously presented anarchic and surreal action series set in Fuzzton and other dimension equivalent Happy Hippy Dale, Malcolm Magic follows the adventures of Malcolm, a sort of boozey bunny and his mismatched band of friends and associates. The action revolves largely around Malcolm and his ongoing and epic battle with his doppelganger and nemesis, Bright Eyes, an escapee from Happy Hippy Dale.
In this instalment, Malcolm finally manages to engage the slippery bad bunny in mortal combat. Yes, it’s a clash of titans. WHEN RABBITS FIGHT!
The writing is very light hearted and tongue in cheek and I can appreciate that. Its gripping but light hearted. Structured but chaotic. Action packed but also heavy in dialogue. Malcolm magic surely has something for everyone?
The art for Malcolm Magic goes well with the writing style. It is complex and rich in detail, but also fun and clear. The amount of time and imagination that must go into MM is outstanding and it surely take an age to finish drawing an episode.
Recently, the artist has started using a new technique and one that I've not seen before, where over the black and white inkwork is placed a few swishes of out of focus colour. The impact is to emphasize intense action and lighting and looks quite amazing to see.
Bring all that together and you have an amazing comic and an essential indy title.
